DYS youth camp welcomes 240 kids

The “Health and Wellness Camp” started on July 11 and will continue Monday to Friday, 8 -11:30 a.m. until July 22. It accepts children between the ages of six to 12 years old and is aimed at “providing an exceptional and stable child care environment” through sports.

As part of the camp’s objectives, playing sports and participating in teamwork-related activities will help kids “learn necessary socialization skills.”

“The activities teach basic skills to the children and we separate them into three groups,” DYS member Alex Olopai told Variety. “Children six to eight years old are put in one group, those nine to ten are in another group, and those 11-12 are in another group.”

Yesterday’s set of sports included volleyball, soccer, and tee-ball, which were conducted at the Oleai Soccer Field and Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Ball Field.

Because of ongoing renovations, the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium was closed.

Activities under basketball, baseball, and athletics are held by Rollers Basketball Club head coach Joe Diaz and Tony Rogolifoi, among others.

Cultura Athletics’ Ron Olopai wanted to thank all volunteers.

“We couldn’t have done it without them. We appreciate their help,” he said.

Local athletes such as Leroy Rangamar, Tyrone Omar, John Nekaifes, and June’s Male Athlete of the Month, Clayton Kenty were onboard to instruct.

The summer camp is an annual event and has been ongoing for more than five years.
