Fast 12, Sonics move to 19U finals on OT wins

The Fast 12 pulled off a late-game recovery and defeated the Division of Youth Services Rollers, 60-56.

The Rollers had earlier claimed the lead after a strong 19-8 run in the second quarter, but collapsed on crucial shots during the last eight minutes.

Jomar Danas lifted the Fast 12 on a late-game surge, stealing twice from Lawrence Deleon Guerrero to mark four of his 14 points in the fourth period.

It was he, Rodney Sacramento, and Lester Vertudez who buried the Rollers with a combined 12 points in overtime.

Erick Dela Rosa and John Darag scored the Rollers’ only baskets during OT with two and six points, respectively.

Vertudez and Sacramento both blasted three-pointers and Danas got away on a reverse layup to exit the semifinals. Teammates Jared Ano and Sheen Metran carried the load in the first quarter to hand the Fast 12 a 14-12 lead.

Dela Rosa and Darag added only five points by the second half, leading to the Rollers’ collapse.

Sacramento topped the scoreboard with 15 points while Vertudez bagged nine.

Meanwhile, the Sonics claimed the first game with a 67-65 victory versus the CK Blazers.

Blazers’ Brandon Alerio picked up a game high 29 points and Patrick Torres ushered in 14, but their efforts alone couldn’t fend the Sonics off in the fourth period.

Aulerio shattered the Sonics’ fragile three-point lead, firing five consecutive free throws and aiding Torres off a basket seconds before the buzzer.

JP Villanueva’s field goal from the three-point line tied the scores, 55-55 at the end of the second half. He, Ezra Caro, Bryl Alegre, Melvin Cadiang, Jimmy Tudela, and Tim Sula garnered 12 points to edge the Blazers in OT.

Cading drove the Sonics’ offensive with 17 points while Villanueva had 12 and Caro earned nine.

The Fast 12 and Sonics’ championship game is scheduled for Friday, October 14 at 5:30 p.m.
