THINK you lift heavy? Gold’s Gym Saipan is inviting the island’s strongest lifters to win all the bragging rights at the upcoming Powerlifting Meet, scheduled for Oct. 26.
Registration deadline is Oct. 19. Competition winners will have the heaviest successfully lifted weights in squat, bench press, and deadlift.
According to official competition guidelines, the meet will use a Rogue Standard Bar and Hampton Olympic rubber-coated plates. All weights will be in pounds. The bar can load up to 640 pounds total.
Each lifter will be granted three attempts per lift in a standard round-robin flight arrangement. Opening attempts will be given at weigh-in and can be changed until five minutes before a lifter’s flight. Second and third attempts must be given to the scorer’s table within 60 seconds of completion of the previous lift.
Participants must be 16 years or older on or before the competition. There is a $35 registration fee for nonmembers; $30 for Gold’s Gym members. Competitors must abide by Gold’s Gym’s general rules and code of conduct while in the competition. A spectator fee of $10 will apply to visiting non-competitors on the day of the competition.
Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in the Open Male and Open Female divisions. The Wilks Formula will be used to calculate scores, ensuring fair comparison between lifters of different body weights.
Shoes are required to participate. “Raw” powerlifting accessories like lifting belts, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps are allowed, but assistive gear such as knee or elbow wraps is prohibited.
Gold’s Gym General Manager Tyce Mister calls on the wider community to give the competition a shot.
“Powerlifting is for everyone — from beginners to seasoned lifters,” he said. “Like any competition, having a clear goal transforms your training: it gives you focus, builds consistency, and pushes you to new levels of strength. Signing up for the 2025 Gold’s Gym Powerlifting Meet isn’t just about competing — it’s about giving yourself a reason to train harder, stay accountable, and celebrate how far you’ve come.”
