Hawks rule week 3 of Traders tourney

The Hawks hauled 31 sets over the weekend after facing the Pink Dynamites and Yellow Idols. With a total of 110 sets, they edged the Dynamites by 13 sets and the Idols by 21.

The Hawks drew first blood last Friday when the team of Oh Imbog and Cristy VillaFlor defeated Dynamites’ Joey Aljeno and Elma Labuson. They easily won 21-10 in the first set and 23-21 in the second.

A victory for Dynamite’s Toshiko Obata and Jerry Hibi meant trouble for the Hawks, who already pulled two sets from Angie Ito and Rey Bulaon. Obata triumphed again in a mixed singles match, triggering a four-win spree for the Dynamites. The Hawks recovered last Saturday when Bulaon stopped Dick Guintu in the second set. They didn’t get the last laugh however, when Dynamite’s Kanata Omori defeated Rick Brien 21-16.

Things seemed to get worse for the Hawks when they faced the Idols, losing their first three games. Imbog joined Rick Brien in another doubles match against Manatsu Omori and Charlie Borja. The Hawks had the upper hand at first, winning 21-16. The Omori-Borja duo fiercely fought back, winning 21-17 in the second set. Imbog and Brien were overrun in the final round after losing 21-19.

Despite their setbacks, things improved for the Blackhawks when Merlie Savellano crushed Emily Vargas in a singles match. Edwin Maratas was the star of the Hawks last Sunday, winning one singles and two doubles rounds. He stopped the Idols at four wins, boosting his team by 20 sets. Ito returned to pummel Idols’ Malou Malasarte 21-19.

The Dynamites secured their spot in the top two after playing the Red Hot Chili Shuttlers, beating them 8-2 last Sunday. Dynamites’ Marlene Peraja and Obata prevailed in the first round, beating Loyda Ito and Anna Alvarez 21-15. Only Rodwealth Espana and Andrew Galvez pulled through for the Shuttlers, beating Efren Cacdac and Guintu in their men’s singles matches.

Falling into third place were the Idols with 89 sets. The Orange Shuttlers stand in fourth with 72, while the GreenBucks have 60 sets. The Royale Blues have 49 sets, while the Red Hot Chili Shuttlers have 41.
