THE True North Hobbies claimed the Thursday division championship of the 2023 SBA Budweiser Open 8-Ball League after snatching the win from the Rendezvous Warriors, 9-8, at the VFW Bar on Thursday.
The Warriors, who were the top ranking team, started strong with a two-win sweep in the opening Partners 8-Ball match.
The Hobbies’ Chester and Charold Hamoy notched back-to-back wins, but the Warriors’ Nolan Rodriguez and Rey Pinangay bagged the remaining two games of the Singles 8-Ball match to remain in the lead, 4-2.
The Hobbies, however, returned fire thanks to the teamwork of Chester, Charold, Rolly Villanueva and Clifford Hamoy who swept the second Partners 8-Ball match to tie the score, 4-4.
Both teams remained evenly matched, splitting the next six rounds to force a third and final Partners 8-Ball match to determine the victor.
Once the dust settled, Villanueva and Chester Hamoy’s chemistry proved more potent than the Warriors’ Cultura and Pinangay as the Hobbies won the point, the match and the Thursday division championship title, 9-8.
In third place were the Black 8 Raiders who bested the Black 8 Shake N Break, 9-6.
