HOPWOOD Middle School remains on top of the food chain in the girls middle school division of the PSS-NMIFA Interscholastic Soccer League SY23-24 as they collected their fourth win of the season by thrashing Francisco M. Sablan Middle School, 11-0, at the NMI Soccer Training Center on Tuesday.
HMS was simply unmatched as each of its player posed a threat. After just three minutes of play, the opening goal was scored by HMS’ Princess Gariguez. A minute later, teammate Angel Calayag found the back of the net. This was followed by her second goal at the 9th minute mark while Elyza Brillo delivered her first contribution within the next minute to give HMS a 4-0 lead in just 10 minutes of play.
FMS held their ground for the remainder of the first half, but at the 19th minute mark, Calayag managed to slip through the cracks of the defensive wall and freed herself for a clear shot to score her third goal of the day.
Up 5-0, HMS returned to the field after the halftime break with fresh legs and went on a scoring spree.
Brillo and Gariguez reignited the onslaught with a goal at the 27th and 28th minute marks. Calayag scored her fourth goal while Brillo completed a hat-trick.
Toward the final minutes of the game, Anica Aquino joined the highlight reel with a goal while Calayag adding the icing on the cake with her fifth make for an 11-0 victory.
DMS vs SIS
The match between Dandan Middle School and Saipan International School ended in a 2-2 draw, thanks to a second-half rally staged by DMS.
SIS had complete control of the first half with Beatrice Gross scoring goals at the 13th and 23rd minute marks.
However, DMS turned the tide in the second half with crucial finishes by Talina Aguon-McClure and Elikristiana Iglecias at the 42nd and 45th minute marks to tie the game, 2-2.
With little time left, both teams failed to score the game-winning goal and had to settle for a draw.
