Junior netters gets ready for NPQ

Ayana Rengiil a 3rd grader in SDA ; Kaito Fuji, a 5th grader in Maris Stella, Abigail Gbewonyo, 8th grader in Maris Stella and Maricar Otto 10th grader are the students who will fly to Guam on June 16-22 to compete in the tennis tournament.Otto placed eighth in the 18 under category in last year’s NPQ tournament in Saipan.In the girl’s 13 division, Rengiil placed 11th last year.Fuji and Gbewonyo will be playing in the NPQ for the first time.NPQ coach Ernestine Rengiil said the junior netters will need at least $6,000 to compete in Guam.Rengiil said donations are still welcome but the young athletes got assistance from the ITF, Palau Tennis Federation and money from the fundraiser conducted earlier.She added that private companies are also pitching in.The annual NPQ is an opportunity for junior tennis players to show their form.Two of those who will finish in the top three places in the NPQ will receive an invitation to compete in the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships and Oceania Closed Junior Championships or Oceania Plate in August.Rengiil said the training is conducted almost every week until the competition in Guam.Rengiil is also encouraging other kids to join the training in preparation for next year’s NPQ.
