KEVIN Codog emerged victorious in the 2nd Annual Marianas Skate Series, garnering a total of 804 points at the Garapan Skate Park on Saturday.
The competition featured participants from various ages and backgrounds showcasing their skateboarding talents in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Codog’s performance was characterized by a series of complex tricks and maneuvers, demonstrating his technical skills, creativity and consistency. His standout moments included his “nose slide shove it out,” which impressed the judges, audience and competitors alike.
The competition’s scoring system was based on difficulty, execution and overall impact.
Codog’s ability to maintain high scores gave him the lead and ultimately the championship.
In round 1, Codog scored 261 points while in round 2, which focused on tricks, he scored 272 and 271 to give him a total of 804 points.
Codog won a trophy and a skateboard deck.
In second place was Aaron Lavapie with a scored run of 231 and scored tricks of 225 and 223 for a total score of 679.
In third place was last year’s champion, Sean Gil, with a scored run of 262, and a scored trick of 256 for a total score of 518.
Codog’s victory reflected his dedication, practice and passion for skateboarding — and it sets a high bar for future competitions.
“I feel great. I didn’t expect anything, but I did my best to win,” Codog said in an interview. Although most of his tricks were the same as last year’s competition, he said his ability to use different transitions and variations set the tone for his performance.
“For this year, I thought Sean Gil was going to win again, but he missed a lot of his tricks, which gave me the advantage,” Codog added.
He hopes that the Marianas Surf Skate League will host more skate events and not just once a year. “There would be a lot more people coming and it’s good for the kids — it keeps them away from drugs and other bad habits,” he said.
The Marianas Surf Skate League, for its part, would like to thank this year’s sponsors for supporting efforts to promote skateboarding, surfing and an active lifestyle for the youth: Marpac, Pokka, C2 Skate Crew, Saipan Surf Company, Salty Skin Pacific, Local Bones, Caravan of Food, Mariana Arts, Sois, DLNR-Parks and Recreation, and All-Star Sporting Goods.
The winner of S.K.A.T.E. will be featured in Variety’s next edition.
