Team Yo Face won the first set 16-10 while the Kingz scored 15-14 in set two. The former had the game point advantage, jumping in the final set with 30-25. Team Yo Face needed to win the third set to secure their lead, while the Kingz needed at least six points. If the Kingz won the final set with less than a six point margin, the game would have been forced into overtime. In this extra set, the match can be won or lost depending on whichever team scores a goal or seven points first.
Unlike volleyball, Rocball teams must score off their serve to win a set or game. During the third set, the Kingz took a 12-4 lead and looked like they were going to cruise into the win bracket. Yo Face however, went on a scoring spree from four to nine points and was closing in when Kingz’ Jay R. Pelisamen landed his second goal the game.
With Pelisamen’s goal, the Kingz soared from 12 to 15 points and regained their serve. On the first serve after his goal, Pelisamen served a two-point ace and closed down game one. He was the game’s heavy hitter with two aces, one kee, and two goals for 12 points – about 30 percent of his team’s score.
Team Yo Face outscored the Kingz 4-2 in aces and 6-4 in kees. The Kingz outscored them however, 3-0 in goals. The series are played in a best of five format. Game two will be played today, 11:20 a.m. at the MHS gym.
