International badminton tournaments mark recovery milestone for NMI

(Badminton Oceania) — The YONEX Northern Marianas Open and Crowne Plaza Saipan International will mark the return of international sport to the Northern Mariana Islands, becoming the first international sporting events held on the islands since Super Typhoon Sinlaku struck in April 2026.

Following an intensive recovery effort involving local and federal agencies, businesses and community organizations, Saipan is once again preparing to welcome athletes, officials and visitors from around the world.

Merlie Tolentino, Northern Marianas Badminton Association president, said the community has demonstrated resilience and unity in the aftermath of the storm.

“These tournaments represent a major milestone for the Northern Mariana Islands,” said Tolentino. “The months since Sinlaku have required an enormous effort from our community. To now be in a position to host international athletes from around the world is a testament to the resilience, determination and collaboration that has driven our recovery.”

Attracting more than 220 entrants per tournament, the back-to-back events will bring players from over 15 countries to Saipan. bringing the Northern Mariana Islands back onto the international sporting stage. The scale of participation highlights the confidence of the international badminton community in Saipan’s return as a host destination.

Badminton Oceania Secretary General Julie Carrel acknowledged the effort behind the recovery and the role of the tournaments moving forward.

“The return of international sport to Saipan is significant not only for badminton, but for the wider Northern Mariana Islands community,” said Carrel. “Athletes from across the globe will travel to Saipan over the coming weeks, creating an opportunity to showcase the islands, reconnect with the international sporting community and celebrate the progress that has been made since April.”

This marks the fourth year Saipan has hosted BWF-sanctioned tournaments, following successful editions in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The tournaments continue to strengthen the Northern Marianas’ presence on the global badminton map.
