Team CNMI — composed of John Nekaifes, Beti Javier, CJ Castro, Eda Sakisat, and Reevalyn and Samylyn Atalig — topped NMC’s Coed Volleyball League, beating rivals Y-Sei, Oh Yeah, and SCFE.
Team CNMI clinched the top seed after a weekly series of regular season matches and defeated Oh Yeah in game one before being ousted to the losers bracket by SCFE.
CNMI’s six-player squad, however, survived Oh Yeah for the second time in the semifinals and crushed SCFE twice in a best-of-three championship series.
Meanwhile, the Marvin Rabauliman-led Marvinators won four straight games to gain the 3-on-3 coed basketball title. The champions outscored KKK, 46-39 and advanced to the semis on a 44-41 victory versus the Jets.
The Marvinators, having crushed Fefe Le Fufu, clashed with the Jets in the finals round.
“At the end of the first half the Jets trailed the Marvinators by three (points). It was back and forth throughout the second half until the final few minutes when the Marvinators laid it all out on the table and increased their lead to as much as eight points at one point,” described Rufino Aguon of NMC’s Health and Physical Education Department.
A late-game collapse dropped the Jets back to 53-48 by the final quarter. Joining Rabauliman were Derick Aughenbaugh, Zack Cruz, and Kagman High School graduate Mercedes Mesa.
Taking the sportsmanship award from both basketball and volleyball leagues were Oh Yeah and the Jets.
“The Health and PE Department’s intramural program would like to thank all the teams that competed. They are all champions. We also thank Mr. Arnold Mesa for his assistance in refereeing the basketball games,” said Aguon.
Next semester’s games will include 5-on-5 basketball and men and women’s volleyball.
