DEDEDO — The Guam Chess Federation is holding recurring chess tournaments at the Micronesia Mall, including the upcoming Liberation Day Blitz Chess Tournament this Sunday, July 21, 2024 starting at 11 a.m. in the Micronesia Mall Center Court. This Sunday’s tournament will feature a 9-round Swiss system competition with a 10-minute time control.
Since the start of 2024, the Guam Chess Federation has successfully organized weekend tournaments at the Micronesia Mall, drawing enthusiastic players of all ages and skill levels. For the month of July, tournaments are scheduled every Sunday, alternating between the Center Court and other event spaces.

Almer Santos, president of the Guam Chess Federation, emphasizes the inclusive nature of the tournaments, as chess is a game that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. Guam Chess Federation aims to foster a love for the game and promote its numerous cognitive and social benefits, he said.
“We encourage everyone, from beginners to seasoned players of all ages, to join us this Sunday,” Santos added.
The Guam Chess Federation is committed to promoting chess as a beneficial activity for both mental acuity and social interaction. As Santos aptly puts it, “Chess is everything: art, science and sport.”

The Guam Chess Federation also looks forward to holding their championship events in the upcoming months to prepare Guam players for off-island competitions.
