AKIKO Miller and Dave Odicta were the top finishers in their respective divisions of the Rotaract Club of Saipan’s 5K Memorial Day Rotaract Fun Run at the Garapan Fishing Base on Saturday morning.
The course stretched north along Beach Road and back, with Akiko Miller finishing first overall — and first in the women’s division — with an impressive time of 22:18.52.
Coming in second in the women’s division was Terra Allen (25:51) followed by Orica George in third (26:29).
In the men’s division, Dave Odicta finished first with a time of 23:09 and second overall, followed by Honofre Tangi (23:13) in second place and Philip Joseph Santos (23:14) in third.
This marks the first year the Rotaract Club of Saipan has organized a Memorial Day weekend fun run.
“To honor those who have fallen or who have served our country and also to fundraise for future committee service projects. That is why we came up with the Memorial Day 5K Fun Run,” said Saipan Rotaract Club President Genelin Camacho.
Regarding the event turnout, Camacho said with the help of Run Saipan, they had 84 registered participants despite a busy day filled with activities across the island.
“Going forward, we will definitely work on improving advanced communication and better public outreach — May is a busy month,” Camacho added.
The event sponsors were IT&E, Marianas Variety, Tan Holdings, Triple J, Great Harvest, Gold’s Gym, McDonald’s, and 670 Rocksteady Shop.
Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that the Memorial Day fun run organized by the Saipan Rotaract Club was its third. In fact, it was the first.
