NMI children now signing up for sports camp

DCCA’s Division of Youth Services director Vivian Sablan also said there are many 13-year-old children who want to join the camp.

She said this year’s Day and Sports Camp which aims to raise self awareness among NMI children for a healthy lifestyle is open to boys and girls age seven to 13.

Camp coordinator, Joey Dela Cruz for his part said the children will be grouped according to age and will engage in variety of sports, leisure, health, fine arts and other fitness activities, all coed.

The Day Camp activities will be held on Monday through Friday, from July 14 to July 21 and will include beads making, weaving, singing, canoeing, swimming and dancing.

The Sports Camp activities that will be held on July 22 to August 1 include soccer, tee ball, track and field, volleyball, golf and basketball.

The philosophy of the camp, Dela Cruz said puts emphasis on the successful growth of each camper, instilling values, morals and respect.

And with incidences of obesity, heart disease, physical inactivity and diabetes on the island, Dela Cruz said it is their mission to foster a spirit of physical activity and recreation among the campers so that they make health and wellness a part of their daily lives.

The camp will have staff members and counselors who are carefully selected to be positive role models for the young campers.

Well trained in instilling self-esteem within an enriched and safe environment, the staffers are certified in first aid and CPR, water safety and coaches.

To reserve a slot for a child, parents or guardian must fill out a registration form and pay one time non-refundable fee of $5.  Only the first 200 children who registered will be accepted.

Registration forms can be picked up at Gilbert C. Ada Gym office and Division of Youth Services at the Capital Hills House No. 1340 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. For more information, please call 664-2510.
