NMI needs $1.5M to build sports complex

The construction of the sports complex will help NMIFA gain membership in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or the International Federation of Association Football.

Commerce said that if the NMIFA becomes a FIFA member, the local sports group will become eligible for different annual grants applications.

With that, they will be able to support the continued development and operation of the local sports complex.

Commerce added that if the NMIFA meets all the requirements, the earliest FIFA grant funding will be available in 2012.

The project will allow the island to host major international sporting events and generate additional revenue, the report stated. It added that the sports complex will also result in the expansion of local sports.

The project includes the construction of two children’s soccer training fields, one international soccer field,  a main office, locker rooms, showers, and meeting rooms.
