NMI’s Carol Lee battles to the finals, finishes second at Egypt tourney

THE NMI’s CAROL Lee, playing for the U.S., placed second in the women’s singles event at the Sharm El Sheikh Tennis Tournament held from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 in Egypt.

In the finals, Lee faced Anna Siskova of the Czech Republic.

In the first set, Siskova took on the role of the aggressor, claiming two consecutive games. Although Lee gave it her all, she could only win two games before falling to Siskova, 6-2.

In the second set, Lee improved her game and matched up well against Siskova. She forced a tiebreaker, but Siskova came out on top, claiming the set 7-5, as well as the match and the championship title.

Before the finale, Lee was on a win streak, beating Jennifer Scurtu of Italy, 6-0, 6-1; Kiara Zabkova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-1; Dimitra Pavlou of Greece, 6-4, 6(6)-7, 7-5; and Saoirse Breen of Fiji, 6-2, 6-0.

In the quarterfinals, Lee dominated Varvara Panshina of Russia, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals, Lee outplayed Joy De Zeeuw of the Netherlands, 7-(6)6, 6-3, to earn a spot in the finals.
