Zhi Yun Li, left, attempts a chip in birdie during round 1 of the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego, California held from July 9 to 11.
NMI junior golfer Zhi Yun Li, competed in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego, California on July 9-11.
Li continues to test his capabilities by competing, this time, “in a big junior event.”
Just like any player new to the scene, it was not easy for Li. “I did not play too well. It’s a hard golf course but not only that, the people that play this tournament are kids that play tournaments every week,” he added.
His best hole in the first round of the tournament was #5 which was highlighted by a chip-in for a birdie that was complimented by excellent putt finishes.
Li finished with a gross score of 82 at the time of this interview. “I don’t think I performed as well as I wanted but I tried my best,” he said. “The other competitors here are really good golfers.”
He added, “I wanted to play junior golf tournaments off-island because there isn’t much [competition on island] and IMG is known to be a big tournament. Playing in a tournament like the IMG Junior World Championship is a significant opportunity, but without everyone who helped me get here, it wouldn’t have happened.”
He said their support is invaluable in helping him achieve his dreams and showcase his talent on an international stage.
He said special thanks go to the following sponsors for their generous donations:
• Turnkey Solutions LLC
• Marianas Pacific Distributors
• Father James Balajadia
• Franco Santos
• Lydia Tan
• Dom Kieffer
• Marco Peters
Special mention also goes to LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort, which has been instrumental in Zhi Yun Li’s preparation for upcoming tournaments.
LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort has graciously provided Zhi Yun Li with free golf rounds, allowing him to refine his skills on its world-class courses. Additionally, they have supplied him with LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort uniforms, ensuring he looks and feels his best while competing.
