The activities in NMI’s main sports facility are now being affected by the scheduled power outages, prompting officials of sports organizations to change their own schedules of meetings and sports events.
Michael A. White, president of Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association has informed everybody that due to the scheduled power outages their regular monthly meeting will be postponed for one week.
NMASA is supposed to meet tomorrow and they had to move it to June 12.
Even Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands President Elias Rangamar has to cancel the Inter-Government/Business basketball league this week until further notice from CUC.
He said they were informed by CUC that the power outages will continue thru out the week at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Local organizing committee chairman Rep. Ramon Tebuteb in an interview said the CUC is actually part of the organizing committee and is asked to put a power outage schedules at the time no event is going on at the Oceania venue.
The Oceania tournaments will be held at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
The committee, Tebuteb said wants the CUC to assure that at the time the sports events are going on, power outages if can not be avoided, be allowed to happen anywhere on the island except at the Oceania venue.
He assured that power outages are going to impact the visiting athletes and they do not want it to happen as much as possible.
“If there’s a need to shut down the power, they (CUC) might want to do it when there’s no event going on,” he said.
Tebuteb added that they will also bring up with the CUC the possibility of securing back up generator in case power outage in the venue can not be avoided.
What really concerns him Tebuteb said is the impact of power outages to the health of the public, particularly those in the hospital and those using medical equipment at home.
The affect of CUC power outages to the health of the general public is still the primary concern, he said.
