Pangelinan is 2011 Bowler of the Year

The annual event, which ended last week Sunday, followed with an awarding ceremony last Saturday at the Saipan Bowling Center.

Pangelinan topped the nine-game roll-off with 1,768 pinfalls, with just two pins over second ranked Richard Leong (1,766).

Pangelinan kicked off with 179 pinfalls in game one and worked his way up at 185, 181, and 185 in games two, three, and four, respectively. His game-high 245 pinfalls didn’t come in until game five. Leong also scored 245 in game five but fell behind Pangelinan, 960-975 overall.

Paul posted 227, 160, 218, and 188 in games six through nine for a 196.44 average. Raymond Angeles trailed Leong at 1,756 pinfalls. Ronald Epan (1,748) and Raymond Zapanta (1,713) completed the top five.

Zapanta scored 177 pinfalls to oust Epan (158) and Angeles (161) from the step ladder finals. He later lost to Leong, 207-146 in the semis.

Leong triumphed again, 173-164 over Pangelinan in game one of their championship round. It was Paul however, who clinched the 2011 title with 183 pinfalls in game two.

Zapanta advanced from fifth to third place despite losing in the semifinals. Angeles and Epan ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

The nine-game roll-off included 12 of the most recent bowlers of the month awardees and 12 alternates. Between July, 2010 and June, 2011, the list of bowlers of the month included: Alex Castro, Efren Cadac, Robert Talavera, Percy Omechelang, Ronald Fuellas, Joe Sablan, Simon Manacop, Joe Sto Domingo, Raphael Zapanta, Danny Robles, Paul Pangelinan, and Richard Leong.

Talavera is Class A champion

Despite ranking 10th in the series, 2010’s Bowler of the Year Robert Talavera topped Class A of the PBA’s Budweiser Classified Tournament.

Richard Leong once again came up second after losing to Talavera, 188-166 in the finals. Leong had earlier beaten Raymond Zapanta, 186-174.

Talavera tallied 1,267 pinfalls to qualify for the playoffs. Leong scored 1,191 and Zapanta earned 1,189. Jonathan Eparwa won fourth place, Raul Dumapit won fifth, and Ronald Epan won sixth.

Melvin Malvar defeated Andrew Sablan, 161-138 to bag the Class B title. Sablan eliminated Joe Sto Domingo, 219-190 prior to the finals.

Other Class B winners were: Bernard Paraiso (fourth), Atoy Banting (fifth), Tony David (sixth), Ramir De Leon (seventh), and Ron Cal (eighth).

Class C winners included: Ronald Batac (first), Rene Cariaso (second), Ben Aizon (third), Elena Soll (fourth), Mel Regis (fifth), Yho Villavicencio (sixth), Resty Ancheta (seventh), and Gigi Zapanta (eighth).
