Pohnpei joins Budweiser softball

A team from Pohnpei, according to KQOD coordinator, Joey Dela Cruz is playing its debut game in the annual tournament that will be held at the Capital Hill Softball Field from Nov. 13 to 14.

Participating teams will face each other in a two-day round robin.

The other teams are the defending champions from Guam; last year’s runner-up from Palau and a new team from Saipan whose last year’s Shell Marianas settled for third place.

Four teams also played in KQOD’s ultimate championship last year but only three insular areas were represented—Saipan, Guam and Palau—with Palau bringing in two teams, the Meyuns who won the second place last year and Oldiais that placed fourth.

Palau’s Meyuns defeated Saipan’s Shell Marianas during last year’s playoff but lost to Guam’s Da Boyz in the championship round.

Dela Cruz said the visiting teams will arrive on Nov. 12 and will be greeted with in an opening banquet at night.

The opening will be at 9 a.m., of Nov. 13, where participating teams, the sponsors and the organizers will be acknowledged.

After the round-robin, the teams will be seeded based on standings for the playoff that will be held on Nov. 14. First placer will face fourth place at 10 a.m., and will followed by game between the second placer and third placer.

The winning teams of each game will advance to the championship round.

But prior to the games in the afternoon, a home run derby will spice up the tournament. Each team will send three players and see who among them will hit the most home runs out of 10 swings.

Last year’s home run derby winner was Balkuu Godfree of Palau. He brought home $200 cash.
