Saipan BC claimed all 11 games and gave up only two sets to crush Berks Blazers BC in the 2011 Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament’s finals at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Only two of their games were forced into a third set — a singles match between Dick Guintu and Macoi Aguda and doubles match between Ferdie Arago and Arlene Naguit and Hannah Choi and Kiok Pang.
Guintu eventually ended Aguda, 21-17, 21-23, 21-17 while Choi and Pang won, 21-11, 19-21, 21-11 over the Arago-Naguit duo.
Saipan BC hasn’t lost its spark since beating Shirley’s Badminton Club on 28 sets last Friday and Saturday. Julie Lee won Sunday’s last match against Blazers’ Lot Abuel (21-5, 21-0).
Both Lot and Wowie Abuel had earlier lost to Gary Bondoja and Heo In Souk, 21-9, 21-13.
The title shouldn’t come as a surprise to Saipan BC, which dominated the regular season with 85 sets. Kim Yun Mun and Oh Anyeol sparked their winning spree on a 21-10, 21-7 win over Rommel Bartolome and Roman Caracut. Sunja and Toshiko Obata followed on a two set victory against Lanie Bartolome and Annette Quiambao (21-15, 21-15).
The Blazers eliminated Golden Racquet BC prior to Sunday’s championship. Shirley’s settled for third place in a consolation round after routing GRBC, 18-15 in sets.
GRBC clinched the playoff’s second seed after grabbing 66 sets during regular season. The Berks Blazers garnered 63 and Shirley’s earned 61.
Taga Badminton Club, which had the lowest total sets, bid adieu to the quarterfinals.
Saipan BC’s 16-player crew also included Mario Diola, Oh Imbog, Joel and Alma Ortega, Kang Yun Moo, Kim Boranah, Lee Sang Mi, and Lee Eun Yee.
