Swishas’ Junie Thongaram takes the mid-range jumper over UMI Shooters’ Chris Lilles during a semi-open division game of the Win Pacific Corporation Invitational Basketball League 2024 at the TSL Sports Complex.
TEAM Swishas acquired their fourth consecutive win by trouncing the UMI Shooters, 70-57, in the semi-open division of the Win Pacific Corporation Invitational Basketball League 2024 at the TSL Sports Complex last Sunday.
Swishas quickly gained control within the first five minutes of the opening half. They delivered 11 unanswered points thanks to back-to-back triples by Junie Thongaram and Jeff Victoria while teammate Francisco Mizutani followed with two more buckets and a split on the charity line.
After breaking the silence with a pair of free throws from Tristan Movilla, the UMI Shooters gradually found their chemistry as Marlon Binuya, Alvin Pantola and July Narciso scored a couple of buckets each.
But it was still not enough to catch up with Swishas. As soon as Jay Art Palmes stepped on the court, he knocked down three straight makes from beyond the arc while teammate JR Galang cleaned up the mess from underneath the rim with five points to maintain a double-digit advantage going into halftime, 40-21.
But the UMI Shooters refused to go down without a fight. Jhune Gathalian, who had not scored, suddenly found his rhythm by converting three shots within the perimeter. He acted as a spark plug for the UMI Shooters as his teammates started to pitch in their fair share with Chris Lilles and Narciso leading the in-and-out action to bring them back within a single-digit, 36-45.
However, as the game progressed, Swishas managed to put the UMI Shooters back in their place, thanks to the all-around productivity of Mizutani, who scored 10 quick points, including two three-pointers, while Steve King delivered eight points to seal the deal, 70-57.
One Pacific vs Unity Trade
Joining the winner’s circle was One Pacific which outplayed Unity Trade, 68-58.
Unity Trade played as a team on the offensive end, but it was the reliability of Christian De Vero and Joel Javier that kept them afloat.
One Pacific, however, outperformed Unity Trade when it came to teamwork, excelling from the three-point line in the first half while going to work on the inside during the second half to stay ahead and eventually claim the win.
