Team NMI tops gold count in Oceania Regional Championship

With Jacque Wonenberg and Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel winning the first two in the 400-meter hurdles, CNMI bagged a total of 14 gold medals.

Clayton Kenty started the silver tally as he tailed Kabiriel in the same event and NMI got a total of seven silver medals.

Yvonne Bennett who could have won gold in the 100-meter sprint after a three-way tie with Guam’s Naome Burk and Nauru’s Lovelite Detenamo, set a good start with bronze medals as team NMI went ahead to win eight of those.

Last Saturday, Kabiriel led the 10,000 kilometer run as he finished it in 40 minutes and eight seconds for his third gold medal and Matthew Mancao came second at 40:14 for his first silver medal.

Lia Rangamar won gold medal after hurling the farthest in the women’s division of javelin throw with 30.15 meters.

In men’s division, Jesus Iguel bagged a bronze medal as he placed third throwing it 38.04 far.

Like in most local athletic events on Saipan, twin sisters, Yvonne and Yvette Bennett were along side each other again in the 200-meter dash. Yvonne crossed the finished line in 27 minutes and 63 seconds to win the bronze medal and Yvette, 27.97 for the bronze.

In men’s division, Tyron Omar handed NMI another gold medal as he finished first at 23.4 minutes, while Iguel finished eighth at 24.88.

Wonenberg reaped another gold medal in the long jump

marking the 4.66 meter point, and Rangamar came second for the silver medal leaping 4.41 meters far.

NMI won a total of 29 medals.

Guam was behind them with 11 gold medals, 12 silvers and six bronze followed by Kiribati with six gold medals, nine silvers and two bronze. Nauru had three gold, four silvers and five bronze; Palau, two gold, two silvers, one bronze, Federated States of Micronesia two bronze and Marshall Islands one bronze.
