Veloria, Miller shine in 10K

SILDREY Veloria and Akiko Miller earned podium finishes for topping the Saipan Marathon’s 10K event on Saturday.

From Micro Beach, the 10K course stretched north to Tanapag before heading back to the starting line.

 Sildrey Veloria came in first overall with a time of 0:36:03 to claim the title.  In second place was another veteran runner, Kosuke Sato, who clocked 0:41:19 followed by Anthony Bergancia with a time of 0:42:20.

In the women’s division, Akiko Miller was first with a finish time of 0:43:33 followed by 16-year-old Kaithyn Chavez at 0:45:32, and Deguchi Maki at 0:48:33.

Age group winners

In the men’s division:

• Reyviel Escarlan led the U14 category with a time of 1:25:25;

• Rex Pixley, U18, 1:13:06;

• Jaeyun Ahn, men’s open, 1:12:59;

• Hyocheol Yu, 35-39 age group, 1:17:03;

• Inkook Ko, 40-44 age group, 1:15:49;

• Chida Shinobu, 45-49 age group, 1:21:41;

• Daniel Dilse, 50-54 age group, 1:22:28;

• James Munnis, 55-59 age group, 1:13:02; and

• Paul Khang, 60 and above, 1:27:09.

In the women’s division:

• Muyang Wang topped the U14 age group with a time of 1:42:37;

• Aubrey Castro, U18, 1:30:02;

• Kelsey Mc Clellan, open age group, 1:20:15;

• Heather Brookm 35-39 age group, 1:18:56;

• Jennifer Su, 40-44 age group, 1:43:10;

• Mi Seon Lee, 45-49 age group, 1:26:28;

• Krista Hawley, 50-54 age group, 1:24:30;

• Lydia Tan, 55-59 age group, 1:24:48; and

• Lynnette Tenorio, 60 and above, 1:48:31.

145 runners participated in the 10K event.

5K winners

Also sharing the spotlight were the 5K distance winners.

Marianas High School students led the men’s division as the top three finishers. Michael Miller finished first with a time of 0:18:13 followed by Pony Tang at 0:18:48, and Jim Takeru at 0:19:00.

“I feel very good and blessed to be here right now. I was in the lead the whole time but 5Ks are never easy, you always have to push yourself to the end,” said Michael Miller.

Asked about MHS notching the top three spots of the 5K distance, he said, “We are going to sweep the next coming years…but I do want more prize money so I might join the next 10K event.”

In the women’s division, 13-year-old Addalee Taflinger claimed first place with a time of 0:23:39 followed by Zhang Tongren at 0:29:10, and Emma Lang at 0:30:21.

100 runners participated in the 5K event.
