Wabol sees tough Tournament of the Champion this year

Wabol who won last year’s TOC said in an interview yesterday that he will still join this year’s tournament but can not guarantee to win the championship again.

Wabol defeated Ed Flores in last year’s TOC which he said is one of the biggest golf tournaments on the island..

The TOC will be held from August 2 to 3.

Winning golf championships, Wabol is getting harder nowadays because there are lots of good golfers coming out as many tournaments keep going on every year.

He said that just like last year there will be many other ace golfers joining the TOC and in topping the championship flight, “we have to acknowledge the ability of the veteran golfers like Joji Taguchi, Adam Hardwicke and Andy Nepaial.

Taguchi defeated Wabol during the 2008 Ninth St. Jude Annual Golf Tournament held at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort’s west course last month.

Taguchi birdied in hole Nos. 4 and 11 and recorded a 2-over par 74 beating zero-handicapper, Wabol who settled for a second place finish after firing a 3-over par 39 in the front and 2-over par in the back nines.

Taguchi and Hardwicke tied in fourth place during the 4th Blue Tee Challenge held at the Coral Ocean Point a few weeks ago. Wabol settled for second place after Bay Yong Man beat him in the second round.

Wabol added that aside from these veterans, there is also a couple of emerging junior golfers who are showing potentials.

They are Kim Taguchi who won the first place in the A Flight in St. Jude Golf Tournament, grossing 76 and Charlie Jo

Taguchi, a nine-handicapper went at-par 36 in the front nines and 4-over par 40 in the back nines.

Wabol won the HANMI Golf Tournament earlier this year and the San Roque Golf Tournament three weeks ago, but lost the Northern Marianas College Fundraiser and St. Jude Golf Tournament

Can’t afford to be too confident in next month’s TOC, Wabol said he will just have to do what it is that has to be done.

To win a big golf tournament like this, Wabol said “is just a matter of playing good at the right time.
