DURING the opening ceremony of the 2023 Saipan MagaLahi Eagles Club Invitational Basketball League in Gualo Rai on Sunday, Saipan Mayor RB Camacho announced that he intends to install solar-powered light at all 42 basketball courts on island.
“What really touched me this afternoon was when I saw the youth in the league,” he said, referring to the young players of MadFlex Basketball Club and other teams.
“As the mayor for this municipality, this is one of the programs that I’m really promoting,” he said, referring to sports.
He said is looking for federal funding “to power all the basketball courts on island with solar lights.”
The mayor said basketball courts and other sport venues “really benefit individuals who want to have a healthy lifestyle. Let’s all work together and support this kind of program here in the community.”
He noted that “the youth of today are more into technology” so they need to be involved in physical activities like sports at least two hours a day.
“We all benefit by joining sports leagues,” he said, as he reiterated that his top three priorities as mayor are safe villages, a clean island and a healthy community.
Two weeks ago, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, in coordination with the Youth Congress, hosted the Youth Summer Sports Blitz, which was a week-long event focused on the health of the youth at the Oleai Sports Complex.
