NMI men’s team settles for bronze in golf

THE NMI men’s golf team shot 224 in the final round to earn the bronze medal in the 2022 Pacific Mini Games at Coral Ocean Resort on Friday.

New Caledonia’s Koch Hugo, Castagne Guillaume, Dylan Benoit and Jules Guepy shot 231 to  win the gold medal while Guam’s Ivan Sablan, Redge Camacho, Louie Sunga and Markus Nanpei scored 239 to bag the silver medal.

New Caledonia’s four-day total was 893; Guam, 901; and the NMI, 928.

The NMI’s Jesse Justin Atalig, Joshua Atalig, Franco Santos and Zhi Yun Li  shot 223 on June 21, the first day of the tournament. On day two, they scored 226.

On day three, they could only score 245 but they recovered on the final day by shooting 224. Santos notched the lowest gross of the day, a 3-under par 69, while Atalig shot 77.

The New Caledonian golfers gained  momentum on day two when Hugo and Guepy each shot 1-under par 71.

Also playing in the men’s team event were Fiji’s Abid Hussein, Shakee Perumal Pillay,  Tomasi Tuivuna and Jia Yi Yao who shot a total of 946 in four days; Papua New Guinea’s Xavier Ishmael, Cassie Koma and Gideon Tikli who totaled 973; and the Solomon Islands’ Ejay Fo’Ori, Richard Tabe Holmes, Tonny Ramo and George Albert Rukabo with a score of 1,049.

Women’s team

In the women’s team competition, New Caledonia’s Ines Lavelua-Tufefe, Mohea Mansbendel, Lola Alibaud and Emeline Mardelaine shot 248 on the final day to win the gold medal. They scored 238 on day one; 235 on day two; and 247 on day three. Their four-day total was 968.

Guam’s Tyanna Jacot, Kayley Kang, Rose Tarpley and Sarah Therrell shot 251 in the final round to take home the silver medal. They shot 242 on day one, 246 on day two, and 260 on day three for a total of 999.

The bronze medalists were Tahiti’s Flavia Reid-Amaru, Laina Faraire, Diandra Mawhinney and Rarau Taerea-Pani who finished with a score of 260 on the final day. They shot a total of 1,009 in the four-day competition: 244 on day one, 250 on day two, and 255 on day three.

The other participants in the women’s team competition were the NMI’s Zhimin Jin,  Jeong Hyun Oh, Rosalina Miranda Rohringer and Jeanette Torres with a total score of 1,069; and the Solomon Islands’ Siru Hickie, Faylyn Moses Taebo, Charisma Orelly Tyson and Greanne Zio Wickham with a total score of 1,158.
