NMI’s Eugenio presents 800m medals at Tokyo Olympics

ROBIN Sapong Eugenio, Oceania Athletics area president of Saipan and Micronesia and member of the World Athletics Council, had the privilege of presenting the medals in the Athletics 800m event Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics.

A  few months ago, Eugenio said he was asked to be part of the Olympic Games as a presenter of medals, adding that he chose the 800m event. “It is one of the toughest events as you have to fight through the heats,” he added.

“Being able to see the Olympic athletes and to greet them — everyone dreams about watching the Olympics live, and I’m here,” he said. “It’s amazing to see the best athletes in the world. It’s a very different feeling going up to the podium and sharing that moment with the athletes as I hand them their medals. It is really one of the greatest Olympic moments for me.”

Eugenio said he will be a medal presenter in one more event.

“I started at grassroot events, giving out medals in our villages, and then at Oceania events, and now the world stage. Just being at the Olympics is truly an honor,” he said.

While in Tokyo, he said he is also learning how the games are organized while observing how coaches and athletes interact. “It’s a great learning experience,” he added.
