THE Oleai Sports Complex’s track and field oval and the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field are closed to the public to give way to repair work.
Resurfacing work at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field oval started Friday as part of the preparations for the 2022 Pacific Mini Games which will be held in June.
Contractors for the project have started mobilizing equipment and clearing the area Friday so for everyone’s safety, the public is not allowed to utilize the oval and the “Tan Ko” baseball field until further notice. Individuals and teams that are using other facilities located at the sports complex are also asked to exercise extra caution as construction and repair works at the Oleai Sports Complex are underway.
“We are asking the public’s cooperation on this closure announcement, as we work on getting our facilities ready for our athletes and officials as well as visiting teams participating in the 2022 Pacific Mini Games,” the Northern Marianas Sports Association said in a press statement.
The CNMI will host the Pacific Mini Games from June 17 to 25. The event will feature competitions in nine sports: athletics, beach volleyball, badminton, baseball, golf, triathlon, tennis, weightlifting, and va’a or outrigger canoe racing.
The track facility will host the athletics competition as well as the opening and closing ceremonies, while badminton will be staged at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium and baseball will take place at the “Tan Ko” field.
Beach volleyball will be held at the Crowne Plaza sand courts and Jones Beach on Tinian (consolation matches) while weightlifting and va’a will be held at Marianas High School and the 13 Fishermen Memorial on Beach Road.
