Typhoon plan

THE recent remarks by Fish and Wildlife Director Richard B. Seman in your newspaper regarding Smiling Cove Marina’s typhoon plan is correct. We are advising the boating public to file an application with the marina office if you intend to seek refuge for your boat at the marina. However, please be informed that the filing of an application is not a guarantee for we have to determine if space is available to safely dock your boat.

The typhoon plan took effect in June 2000. Its main purpose was to organize vessel movement and placement in Smiling Cove Marina, ahead of time, before an impending storm is upon us. The plan was also initiated to prevent disagreements and arguments between outside boaters, the tenants and the marina management that were experienced in the past. The pecking order of the typhoon plan is: 1st, marina tenants; 2nd, approved applicants seeking refuge in the marina; then 3rd, all other vessels if workable. Every captain or vessel owner must be responsible to have his typhoon plan for his boat prepared ahead of time.

The plan now requires updating to list the new tenants at the marina and delete former ones. A chart of the marina indicates where these owners/vessels are berth. That was the intention of our advertised public notice several weeks ago. The ad was not a revision of the plan but rather an update of authorized vessels to it. I hope that this explanation satisfies the numerous inquiries we had received because of this announcement.
