NMI holds 2021 International Coastal Cleanup

THIS year’s International Coastal Cleanup in the CNMI was a success, thanks to the cooperation and participation of various government, business, and community partners on Saturday.

The ICC is the world’s largest single-day cleanup event whose participants are volunteers from states and territories throughout the U.S. and over 100 countries worldwide.

Data collected during the ICC is entered into the Global Trash Database and is crucial to solving the world’s ocean pollution problem.

Colleen Flores, 2021 ICC coordinator, in an interview said specific numbers, such as how many participants and how much trash was collected, will not be available until the end of this week.

During last year’s ICC, over 900 members of the CNMI community collected more than 9,000 pounds of trash in 76 locations on Rota, Saipan, and Tinian.

Participants in the ICC event in the CNMI each adopted a location and were asked to tally data while collecting debris.

Cleanup supplies were available upon request, and trash hauling and disposal were conducted by the CNMI Bureau of Environmental Coastal Quality and the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance.
