ACCOMPANIED by several Precinct 3 voters, members of the NMI Democratic Party, family members and other supporters, former Commonwealth Utilities Corp. budget officer Corina L. Magofna on Friday filed her candidacy for the Oct. 16 House special election in Precinct 3.
Also joining Magofna were U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, the first CNMI governor, Carlos S. Camacho, Sen. Edith Deleon Guerrero, Democratic members of the 22nd House and former Judge Herbert D. Soll.
Magofna has also been endorsed by Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez and Sen. Paul A. Manglona, both independents who are aligned with the Democrats.
According to Democratic Sen. Edith Deleon Guerrero, “Corina has no other agenda than to work for and in the best interest of our people. Our people deserve public servants like Corina. It’s time to restore faith in our CNMI government and by voting for Corina L. Magofna you will bring us closer to a more prosperous CNMI for all, and not just for a select few.”
She also would like to remind voters that “nobody knows where your pencil goes. Let’s put an end to political intimidation and retaliation by voting for good governance and for Democrats like Corina on Oct 16, 2021.”
In an interview, Kilili told reporters on Friday that he saw Magofna’s passion for the job, “and I’m sure she would make it” and become the sixth female member of the 22nd House.
More importantly, he added, the people and the CNMI Legislature need someone who can read a financial statement.
“It is really important,” Kilili said. “People want someone who has to do something about the finances of the government but elected officials need to first know how to read a balance sheet, a profit-and-loss statement, or a cash flow statement,” he added.
Kilili said he believes Magofna has that qualification “and it will be helpful, I think.”
In a separate interview, Magofna said, “I am committed to work for the people. I am one with the people. I believe 100% in representing them. The people deserve good governance. The people deserve a government that would give them accountability, responsibility, transparency and honesty. I am ready and committed to work for the people,” she added
Magofna ran in the 2020 midterm elections and finished seventh in the race for six House seats in Precinct 3 said. “I am very, very determined this time around,” she said.
“I’d like the people of Precinct 3 and the entire CNMI to know that when I go in, I am not just going to work for the precinct. I am going to work for every single one of us. I humbly ask every single voter in Precinct 3 to please consider voting for me in this coming special election and I promise that when I go in, I will give my absolute best to represent them in the best way, in their best interest,” she added.
Magofna is running against Republican Grace “Pitu” Sablan-Vaiagae to fill the House seat of the late Republican Rep. Ivan A. Blanco who passed away in July.
