Veloria claims two badminton titles

SEFRIC Veloria brought home two titles in the C Division of the TakeCare Badminton Open on Wednesday at the Ada gym.

In the C Men’s Singles, Veloria’s reaction time as well as relentless offensive and defensive pressure kept him on top of his game.

In round 1, he trounced Kevin Barros 21-5, 21-7 but faced a much tougher opponent in the second round, Paulo Quidato. Veloria nevertheless prevailed 21-18, 21-19 to move into the semifinals.

Against another strong opponent, Dez Antonio, Veloria played with enough consistency to win the first set 21-19. In the second set, a more confident Veloria finished strong to win 21-10 and move into the final round.

In the loser’s bracket, Quidato and Antonio had to slug it out, and both  played with all their hearts as the match went down to the last point.

Quidato emerged the winner, 21-20, 21-20, to earn a rematch against Veloria in the finals which Veloria won, 21-18, 21-14.

C Men’s Doubles

In the final round of the C Men’s Doubles, the tandem of Veloria and Antonio clashed with Leonard Manuel and Noel Watiwat in three sets.

In the first set, Manuel and Watiwat were in sync and aggressive  en route to a 21-17 triumph.

Antonio and Veloria reassessed their strategy and turned the tide in the second set with continuous smashes that forced Manuel and Watiwat to commit errors.

Antonio and Veloria  bagged the second set, 21-12.

In the third and final set, Manuel and Watiwat had to play catch up, but Veloria and Antonio maintained their efficiency to seal the deal, 21-17, and bag the C Men’s Doubles title.

Antonio earned his second title with Tajima as they claimed the C Mixed Doubles title in Group A, beating Veloria and Jadel Ignacio 20-21, 21-14, 21-19.

The Group B title was claimed by Ian Lubao and Patricia Surima who bested Noel Watiwat and Tisha Ferrer 20-21, 21-14, 21-19.
