Judicial conference to discuss employment, Covid-19, cannabis issues

A JUDICIAL conference will be held Friday, July 2, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Topics to be discussed include issues pertaining to employment, Covid-19 and cannabis.

The speakers are Nakkisa Akhavan, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission supervisory trial attorney; and John Malone, general counsel for Shryne Group Inc.

Both will be presenting virtually.

Akhavan will discuss recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions including a review of the implications that the Bostock case has on employers and discrimination claims, religious discrimination issues in the workplace, and the impact of other potential legislation.

In Clayton County, Georgia, Gerald Bostock was a child welfare services coordinator who was fired after his employer found out that he participated in an LGBT softball league.

But the Supreme Court held that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees against discrimination for being gay or transgender.

Akhavan will also discuss Covid-19 challenges to employment law and litigation.

As for Malone, he will talk about “Cannabis: Security, Compliance and Capital Finance.”

The conference will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 12 p.m.

CNMI justices and judges are expected to attend the conference.
