(Office of the Governor) — The director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Guam, CP Liu, made his first official visit to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on July 9, 2025.
During the meeting, Liu was warmly welcomed by CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios. The two leaders engaged in productive discussions centered on expanding economic opportunities for Taiwanese investors, fostering partnerships in health and education, and the mutual aspiration to establish direct flights between CNMI and Taiwan.
Governor Palacios expressed his sincere appreciation for Director General Liu’s initiative to visit Saipan and highlighted the significance of this milestone. “We are honored by Director General Liu’s visit. This is an important step forward in strengthening ties and creating new avenues of cooperation between CNMI and Taiwan,” said Governor Palacios.
The conversation covered a range of promising opportunities for economic collaboration, including investment in tourism, infrastructure, and trade. Both parties also discussed the potential for joint health programs and educational exchanges aimed at benefiting students and professionals from both regions.
One of the urgent priorities was the mutual hope to establish direct flights between CNMI and Taiwan, a move that would boost tourism, enhance business connectivity, and foster people-to-people exchanges.
Director General Liu expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to building a stronger partnership with the CNMI. “This visit marks the beginning of many meaningful collaborations. We look forward to deepening our friendship through concrete projects that will benefit both our communities,” said Liu.
The visit concluded with an exchange of tokens and a commitment to continued dialogue and cooperation on shared priorities.
