“Kareran Sirena” was written by young authors Ariah Villagomez, Emma Sablan, and Serenity Fujihira of the CNMI Girl Scout and guided by 2019 Miss Marianas Shannon Sasamoto.

Illustrations were produced by local artist Mikeala San Nicolas.

The book takes us on an adventure with a young mermaid named Sirena who explores the Northern Mariana Islands. Sirena encounters several characters who, along the way, taught her important lessons about family and community in the Marianas. She visits Pagan, Asuncion, and Maug, and throughout her journey, she learns that when you live in the Marianas you are never alone.

Paired with the book will be the program’s first-of-its-kind Sirena plush doll, which will be made available for purchase in limited quantity.

LDTF’s Language and Literacy Young Author’s Program’s Sixth children’s book edition was made possible by partial funding through a Northern Marianas Humanities Council grant.

LDTF will also be selling our previously published books from other local young authors under our Language and Literacy Young Author’s Program, such as “Hafa Sinentete-mu,” “I Lina’la Hu,” “Maolik Kontra Baba,” “Bweletaal Wischira Eew Kkol Refaluwasch,” and “I Duendis”

A special thanks to LDTF’s partners: NMI Girl Scouts, Stellar Marianas, Joeten Kiyu Public Library, CNMI Womens Association, and the Offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor
