CUC provides update on renewable energy initiatives

(CUC) — The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation is making steady progress toward establishing a renewable, reliable, and secure electric power system across the CNMI.

As part of its strategic energy planning, CUC had contracted GHD Inc. to update its 2016 Integrated Resource Plan, with funding provided through a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The updated IRP outlines the CNMI’s current generation capacity, projected energy demand, and strategic initiatives to support a transition to a more sustainable and dependable energy future.

In alignment with the CNMI’s energy goals, CUC plans to release Requests for Proposals within the next few weeks. The RFPs will invite independent power producers to develop solar photovoltaic  systems paired with battery energy storage systems. Project awards are expected to be made by the end of this year, contingent upon compliance with CUC’s procurement regulations and the selection of qualified vendors.

Planned renewable energy projects and generation capacities:

• Saipan: 20 MW and 52 MW (Three Sites)

• Tinian: 10 MW

• Rota: 3 MW

Total proposed capacity: 85 MW

These projects represent a major step forward in diversifying CNMI’s energy mix, reducing reliance on aging diesel generators, and enhancing long-term energy security for island residents.

CUC remains committed to investing in system upgrades and renewable solutions to meet rising energy demands and modernize the grid. These initiatives will help ensure the delivery of reliable, cost-effective power while advancing the CNMI’s goals for sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
