Garapan cleanup

Volunteers with PDM Promoters Inc., the Saipan Awaodori Team and Kinpachi Restaurant conducted a cleanup from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, in the Garapan tourist district.

According to Sonia G. Siwa, PDM Promoters Inc./Kinpachi Restaurant coordinator, “Our young volunteers feel a sense of accomplishment every time they help maintain their island’s cleanliness — they are happy doing it.”

Siwa said “empty bottles, soda or beer cans, cigarette butts, plastic, Styrofoam and face masks were the most frequently littered items we found in the area. There were  also pieces of metal with sharp edges and  glass which are not just unsightly but can be dangerous and may cause injuries to passersby. Trash was also thrown on empty flower pots at Paseo de Marianas.”

She added, “We are asking for the public’s cooperation. Please  dispose your trash properly.”

The volunteers consisted of  20 members of the Saipan Awaodori Team and seven Kinpachi Restaurant staff members. They collected  a total of 720 lbs of trash.
