(Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services) — On Thursday, April 22, 2021, at approximately 7:37 a.m., a male individual called 911, reporting heavy smoke that was coming out of an apartment building in Afetna.
At 7:39 a.m., Engine 2, Rescue 1, Medic 1, and Engine 5 responded to the location.
At 7:51 a.m., Rescue 1 arrived on scene first and confirmed it was a structure fire. At 7:54 a.m., one team entered the structure — a semi-concrete apartment with nine units.
At 7:58 a.m., the company commander, Lt. Patrick Semens, said the fire was under control and at 8:03 a.m., it was fully extinguished.
According to Firefighter III John San Nicholas of the Division of Fire Prevention and Arson Investigation, apartment unit 1 sustained severe smoke and heat damage in the bedroom on the southern side, and moderate smoke and heat damage in the living room.
The structure fire has been ruled as “accidental (candle fire),” and no injuries were reported.
