SHIRLEY’S Football Club continues to lead the Division A of the Dove Women’s League Spring 2021 after clinching its eighth win on Sunday when it defeated Kanoa Football Club 2-1 at the NMI Soccer Training Center.
The first half of the game was filled with countless exchanges. Kanoa’s Lalaine Pagarao, along with Paulynn Joyce and Khristelle Itaas, led their team’s offensive, opening up several scoring opportunities but they just could not deliver.
Shirley’s suffered the same fate despite the work of Jeralyn Castillo, Gabi Race and Dianne Pablo who matched the tempo with a handful of attempted shots.
Thanks to the defensive awareness of Kanoa goalie Theresa Toves and her Shirley’s counterpart Mae Ito, neither team could find the back of the net.
But both teams stepped up the action when they returned to the field for the second half.
Shirley’s hustle broke through at the 32nd minute mark as Teromy Diaz completed the transition play to give her team the lead.
Shirley’s was not done yet. The team kept the momentum flowing as its players swiftly regained possession and found the back of the net a minute after with Jerlyn Castillo at the trigger for a 2-0 lead.
Kanoa cooked up an answer moments later. The dribbling skills of Lalaine Pagarao allowed her to slip by defenders and to score her team’s first goal at the 35th minute mark.
But Shirley’s players were able to maintain control throughout the remaining minutes of the game to clinch victory, 2-1.
