Fire damages 8-unit apartment in Chalan Laulau

A FIRE broke out at an eight-unit apartment owned by United (not Conwood as earlier reported) Construction Corp. in Chalan Laulau on Thursday.

Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services acting public information officer Robert Mojica Aquino said a total of five families were referred to American Red Cross for further assistance. No one was injured.

Aquino said DFEMS received a call about the fire at approximately 9:12 a.m.

At 9:13 a.m., he added, Engine 5, Rescue 1, and Medic 1 responded to the location.

At 9:18 a.m. Engine 5 was the first to arrive at the scene.

At 9:40 a.m. the fire was under control and by 10:08 a.m. the scene was secured.

Led by Firefighter III Benjamin Manglona, the Division of Arson Investigation then conducted an investigation.

Manglona said apartment units 1, 2, 3 and 4 sustained the most damage from the fire while units 5, 6, 7 and 8 sustained smoke and soot damage.

“The origin of the fire was…apartment unit 2, the southern side of the structure,” Manglona said, adding that the blaze has been ruled as an “accidental fire.”

He added that the ignition source was a “faulty” electrical component of an air conditioner in apartment unit 2.
