The organization also received help from 13 Upward Bound program students who, with their advisors and program coordinator, arrived at the site early to set up the books for sale.
“What we want to do is have Upward Bound become active in the community,” the students’ advisor Hedwig Hofschneider told Variety. “It is also a great way to build good character.”
Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to help high school students prepare for college.
Library Friends president Maureen Sebangiol said they are glad to see people browsing around and picking books that interested them. “I am also most grateful for the help of our volunteers and Upward Bound,” she added.
Among the volunteers were Velma Sanchez who arrived early to help with setting up the books.
“I enjoy books and helping the community. This is a perfect volunteer job because the book sale is for a good cause,” Sanchez told Variety.
The book sale aims to generate funds for the library’s maintenance and operation expenses.
