Palau to host summit of Micronesian leaders

Spearheaded and organized by the Ministry of State and Office of the President, preparations are underway for the summit.

Palau President Johnson Toribiong will be leading the dignitaries who will be attending the three-day gathering.

The MCES this year will be held at the Ngarachmayong Cultural Center in Koror, Palau.

Also attending the event are Federated States of Micronesia President Emanuel Mori, Marshall Islands President Jurelang Zedkaia and the governors of Guam, Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI), and FSM States of Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk and Yap.

Invitations have also been extended to other governments such as Nauru and Kiribati to attend the gathering this year. But according to the Ministry of State, they have yet to receive confirmations from officials of the two island republics.

The MCES is an annual get-together of leaders from different countries and states in the Micronesia region. The event is a forum for the participating governments to discuss and address challenges and issues of mutual concerns, including education, health, environment, energy, telecommunications, climate change and others.

Initially organized as the Western Micronesia Chief Executive Summit, the forum has evolved the past 14 years to include eastern Micronesia.

The last MCES was held in Saipan.
