On Wednesday night, a book signing ceremony was held for Guam Books & Beads, a company run by Alison Taimanglo Cuasay and Tanya Chargualaf Taimanglo, which features children’s books and handcrafted jewelry.
The event was held at the office of clinical psychologist Dr. Patricia Taimanglo in the ITC Building in Tamuning for two books written by Tanya Chargualaf Taimanglo and a third written by Dr. Taimanglo’s daughter Alison Taimanglo Cuasay.
The first two books from Tanya are “Attitude 13: A Daughter of Guam’s Collection of Short Stories” and “Sirena: A Mermaid Legend from Guam,” featuring illustrations by Sonny K. Chargualaf.
Cuasay’s book “Tasi and Matina — The story of the First Clown Fish” features illustrations by Dr. Taimanglo.
“She wrote the story when she was in the 5th grade,” said Dr. Taimanglo of her daughter’s book.
The story is about a young girl named Tasi who befriends a lonely clown fish named Matina who had black stripes on his skin. The two played in the waters off of Hila’an point but one day Tasi doesn’t show and Matina becomes sad again. He meets up with her sisters and finds out Tasi became very sick. He becomes friends with Tasi’s sisters and is happy again. His black stripes then turn white to show his happiness.
Dr. Taimanglo said there is one thing that is important about her daughter’s book and Tanya’s and it’s that they instill the importance of family and commitment.
She said Alison just finished her bachelor of science degree at National University to work as a registered nurse.
Tanya is a former teacher with the Guam Department of Education. She also wrote for notable local magazines such as Latte Magazine, Marine Drive Magazine and Guam Business Magazine.
