Anthony Pellegrino, NMTI president said, they already finished the cleanup, repair and painting of the facility but the mayor’s office hasn’t paid the $15,000 cost for materials and labor.
NMTI carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical students were performing the work at the facility, he said.
NMTI’s supervisor and instructor monitored the students’ work to maintain quality and ensure safety, he added.
The next step is to build the cages for the animals.
In a separate interview, Mayor Donald G. Flores said the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation supports amending the law regarding the use of the animal shelter fund.
This will allow his office to pay NMTI which can then proceed with the project, Flores said.
According to current law, the fund appropriated for the animal shelter is only for the construction of the building.
Pellegrino said they can complete the construction of cages and other amenities at a minimal cost.
The mayor’s office is hoping they can resume the project and finish it before Christmas, he added.
