SSHS cadets entertain manamko’

The 29 students, including Charlie Company commander Cadet Capt. Jade Gomez and Delta Company commander Cdt. Capt. Shelane Borja, made various presentations.

“This is part of our giving service to the community, and our way of giving back to the people,” Gomez said.

The program started at 9:30 a.m.

Gomez said they made coconut candy which they gave to the manamko’.

The manamko, for their part, taught them weaving and origami, the Japanese art of folding paper.

Borja said they appreciated spending time with the manamko’.

Some of the senior citizens told students stories about World War II and the hardship they endured during the war.

“Our visit was very fruitful because we learned a lot of things from them,” Borja said.

Their visit was “very productive,” according to Rose DLG. Mondala, the Aging Office director.

She said the manamko’ need more interaction with other people, especially with young students.

“I wish other high schools will come and interact with the manamko’,” she said.

JROTC instructor Sgt Major Joaquin Kiyoshi said he will ask other units on island to visit the Aging Center.

He said  such visits are very educational.

At school, he said the cadets will be asked to reflect on what they learned during their visit at the center.

Senior Citizen Advisory Council president Teresita Sorroza said the students toured the facilities at the center and liked what they saw.

She said the students were very fast learners.

“We are happy they visited us. It’s nice to have a different atmosphere with the youth,” she added.

Before lunch time, students entertained the senior citizens with a “beauty pageant.”

Four contestants — Mark Norita, Dae Hyun Kim, Rufino Aquino and Eddie Demei —  joined the search for Ms Pugua.

The competition included talent, evening gown and question and answer portions.

The students also played pool, danced and mingled with the manamko’ during the program.
