About 48 students from nine to 18 years old, including members of the Rhythm and Sound Club of Rota High School, participated in the event.
Barrie C. Toves, a recording artist, composer and musician, said he was impressed by the talents of the students, some of whom performed original compositions.
Last Friday’s event was the third show this year that was organized by Rota High School students.
Toves said the Division of Youth Services, of which he is the employee-in charge on Rota, helped facilitate the event.
The Rhythm and Sound Club hosted the show in collaboration with the Rota teachers, especially Tara Martin and Camas Baugh.
Toves believes that the participating students can further develop their talents with the proper guidance and support.
As a musician, Toves said he has been advocating, promoting and developing the musical talents of the youth on Rota.
Toves, who is also a sand painter, said he wants students to likewise develop their skills in painting and other art forms.
Rep. Teresita A. Santos, Ind.-Rota, lauded the organizers of the talent show.
“I am in support of this kind of activity that helps the youth develop their talents. I was very impressed of the students,” she said.
She is confident that Rota will be producing more talented musicians.
The show, she added, was a great opportunity that should be promoted on the other islands.
Toves said they able to secure funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase a sound system and accessories.
He said their guitars and drums were donated by former municipal council secretary Vincent Calvo.
Toves also donated some of his musical equipment and instruments.
“It was my dream of helping the children and the youth,” he said, hoping that a “star” will soon rise from Rota.
He said the parents were very appreciative of the program.
According to Toves, they are also planning to acquire recording equipment so students can make their own album.
