CNMI residents advised to prepare for heavy rain, gusty winds

The CNMI Joint Information Center and the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office, in coordination with the National Weather Service – Guam, advise residents of the CNMI that Invest 92W is expected to bring unsettled weather to the Mariana Islands over the next 24 to 36 hours, with the strongest impacts likely over Saipan and Tinian.

Current forecast information:

🔵 Invest 92W is expected to pass near Guam and south of Saipan and Tinian later tonight (June 18) into early Friday (June 19) morning.

🔵 Winds: lighter near the center, stronger to the north; CNMI winds of 15 to 25 mph sustained and 25 to 35 mph gusts are possible. Rota may see 10 to 20 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 25 mph.

🔵 Rainfall: 2 to 4 inches possible for the CNMI, with higher amounts if the system slows.

🔵 Impacts: heavy showers may cause ponding and localized flooding in low-lying areas and drainage basins.

🔵 Seas and surf: combined seas around 5 feet, with surf up to 7 feet on east-facing reefs and beaches.

Residents are advised to secure tents, canopies, tarps, and other loose outdoor items. As a reminder for individuals with a tent from the STRONG program, the tents are rated to withstand up to 4 inches of rain per hour and winds up to 55 mph. Based on current forecasts, they do not need to be taken down at this time.
