US Appeals Court CJ, ex- Stanford Law dean to speak at Palau CLE Seminar

An official at the Palau Supreme Court told the Marianas Variety that Chief Justice John Clifford Wallace of the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and former Stanford Law Dean Kathleen Sullivan will be arriving in Palau this week to speak at a Continuing Legal education (CLE) Seminar.

The event will be held at the Koror State Assembly Hall in Koror, Palau on December 9.

The official disclosed that both Wallace and Sullivan will discuss and give a presentation on legal ethics to participants of the event.

Expected to grace the gathering are members of the Palau Bar, judges, government lawyers, and members of the Palau Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Arthur Ngiraklsong.

Wallace is an American judge and legal luminary.

Wallace was born in San Diego, California. He received a B.A. from San Diego State University in 1952, and an LL.B. from University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1955.

Wallace served as a federal trial-court judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, having been nominated to the post by President Richard Nixon on Oct. 7, 1970.

Wallace was subsequently nominated to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by Pres. Nixon on May 22, 1972. He was confirmed by the US Senate on June 28, 1972, and received his commission the same day.

Wallace served as Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit from 1991 to 1996. He assumed senior status on April 8, 1996.

Sullivan is a nationally prominent scholar and teacher of constitutional law.

A professor of law at Harvard Law School before joining the Stanford Law School faculty in 1993, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

An outstanding litigator who has argued before numerous appeals courts and the U.S. Supreme Court, she has been named by The National Law Journal as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America.

From 1999 to 2004, Professor Sullivan served as the eleventh dean of Stanford Law School and the first woman dean of any school at Stanford.
