Soriano takes Marianas Turkey Shoot 8-ball title

Soriano took home $102.50, Pacific Amusement’s championship trophy, and a turkey from USSP. He won the tournament in 2005 and 2006, with a second place finish in 2008.

Hamoy won first runner-up for the second year in a row. He also bagged a trophy, a turkey, and $61.50, while Marc Brian Nelvis earned a trophy and $41.00 for winning third place.

Soriano moved up the winner’s bracket by besting Ruel Marciano and Joey Lucido.  Lucido handed Ron Chisato his first loss. Hamoy’s smooth play got him past Juancho Mendoza and Nolan Cultura, and he followed by sending Soriano to the losers bracket.

John Mongami topped Primo Rivera then lost to Taylor Watanabe. Nelvis was last Wednesday’s sharpshooter, taking down Rolly Villanueva, Boyet Sequioco and Watanabe. Hamoy put an end to his streak by running the table after Nelvis’ break.

Marciano topped Chisato, but only watched as Sequioco pocketed the 8-ball on the break. Mendoza eliminated Mongami and Sequioco before falling to Soriano after a cue-ball foul gave him ball-in-hand.

Lucido moved past Villanueva and Cultura playing a safe, defensive style. Watanabe solved that problem, but not Soriano’s cue-ball positioning in the losers bracket’s semi-finals.

Soriano took a close match from Nelvis to reach the finals with two games to win. He won the first rematch as Hamoy appeared to have been sitting too long. The third game disappointed Hamoy, who was on his way to a win when he touched an object ball with the bridge, giving Soriano ball-in-hand and the championship.

Marpac provided a number of Bud family six-pack coolers as raffle prizes afterward.

USSP’s open 8-ball tournaments will continue every Sunday until the end of the year. The entry fee is $10 with the first, second, and third place finishers splitting the pot. Registration starts at 7 p.m.

The tournaments are played in double-elimination format, following BCA rules. For more information, contact USSP’s Rose or Ken Phillips at 233-1984.
